Pollock are more concentrated during daylight and a wide opening  is needed to target a school, at night fish disperse into the water column to give the "salt & pepper" marks as seen on sounder screens. Trawlers use the same gear at night as in the day, but they can adjust the setback and weight bundles to give a higher vertical opening.
